Povetkin dismantles Byrd!

Heavyweight Alexander Povetkin pounded former titlist Chris Byrd into submission until Byrd's corner stopped the fight in the 11th round. It seems that Sam Peter, who recently overcame 3 knockdowns against gentle giant Jameel Mcline, is Americas only hope. Ouch.

*******************

There are reports that De La Hoya-Mayweather did even better at the box office than originally thought. It seems a rematch is inevitable, and that is good for boxing, but bad for our pocketbooks. Wasn't the last one like sixty bucks?

Does anyone really watch ESPNs The Pretender?

Big Fights on the Horizon!

There are reports of a possible Vladimir Klitschko-Sultan Ibragimov Heavyweight unification bout to take place at the beginning of next year. Klitschko currently holds the IBF stap while Ibragimov is currently wearing the WBO version around his waist.

In any event, lets hope this deal gets done so we can ever move closer to having a real Heavyweight champion again!

**************************

Welterweights Paul Williams and Kermit Cintron are set to fight in Feb. on HBO. The winner of this fight will put himself in prime position for a big payday.

I like Paul "The Punisher" Williams to push his record to 34-0. In fact, the Mac Man is calling it by K.O.

**************************

Stuff is happening in world of MMA that I don't really care about and neither should you.

***************************

Nov. 3 is officially European boxing day as Joe Calzaghe (probably the most under appreciated fighter in the world) takes on equally under appreciated and undefeated Mikkel Kessler for the Super-middleweight championship. This is a great fight and all the more reason why boxing fans should subscribe to HBO.

The Macademia Nut is calling for Calzaghe to win by decision!

***************************

The week after the Calzaghe-Kessler fight, Miguel Cotto will face "Sugar" Shane Mosley on HBO PPV. This should be all Cotto-Judah was, but even better! Mosley is a better fighter than Judah and should be able to hit Cotto as much as he wants.

The only question: can he hurt him enough for it to matter?

The Mac Daddy thinks so and is calling for the minor upset: Mosley by K.O!

***************************

James "Lights Out" Toney is coming off his steroid suspension. When in shape, he is a decent name to add to the lackluster heavyweight division. Maybe a rematch with Evander Holyfield is in order. Toney K.O.d "The Real Deal" in their first fight, but has never looked as good as he did that night again.

***************************

Former Heavyweight contender Chis Byrd if fighting Alexander Povetkin tomorrow night.

Yawn.

****************************

Finally, Juan Manuel Marquez will be facing Rocky Juarez on Showtime next Saturday night. Marquez should win the decision easily. Now, if only he'd fight a rematch with Manny Pacquiao!

Pavlik-Taylor II?

According to espn.com, Jermaine Taylor has exercised his option to rematch Kelly Pavlik for the world middleweight championship. Pavlik stopped Taylor in the seventh round in their first fight. The Mac Man wonders if this is a good idea for Taylor. Taylor hasn't seemed to improve since his meteoric rise in the middleweight ranks. Perhaps he needs to take some "easier" fights to build his confidence.

But, for boxing fans this is great news. We get the two best middleweights in the world fighting again after their first very exciting fight! Hooray for us (and HBO).

Also, if you like Mickey Ward as much as you should, there is a great article on espn.com's boxing page. It will make your liver hurt just reading it!

BTW, in cased you missed it, Floyd Mayweather was voted off ABC's Dancing with the Stars last week. This is probably the worst thing that could have happened for Ricky Hatton.

Lucian Bute wins IBF Belt!

According to fightnews.com, Lucian Bute (21-0) defeated the IBF 168lb. champion Alejandro Berrio (26-5) when a barrage of punches forced the referee to stop the fight in the 11th round.

The bout occured Friaday, Oct. 19 at the Bell Centre in Montreal.

Unfortunately for Bute, the true champion of the division is currently preparing himself for a title defense against Mikkel Kessler on
Nov. 3. Joe Calzaghe is the current Ring magazine champion, also known as the only title belt true boxing fans recognize.

Holyfield not retiring!

According to an article on Espn.com, Evander Holyfield will continue his quest for an unprecedented 5th heavyweight championship of the world. After his last loss, to Sultan Ibragimov in Russia, Holyfield dropped to 42-9-2.

Most people around boxing believe that Holy should retire. Holyfield does not.

"My goal is to be the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world,'' Holyfield stated after the fight.

While the Mac man admits he believed Holy had a good shot at offing Ibragimov in his last fight, the truth of the matter is Evander is now an aged warrior who has lost much of the speed and quickness that allowed him to become a champion in the first place.

Yet, Evander says he will press on.

I say good luck to him. If the man wants to fight on, let him fight on.

Keep swingin', Evander!

October P4P List

Every month the Mac Man will unleash his P4P list. Here is this months:

1. Floyd Mayweather, Jr. (Welterweight)
- Mayweather isn't the greatest of all-time, but he's on his way to being mentioned.
2. Manny Pacquiao (Jr. Lightweight)
- Pacman is not just a fan-friendly fighter, he's also one of the best in the world.
3. Bernard Hopkins (Lt. Heavyweight)
- Hopkins is one of the greatest Middleweights of all-time and his overall achievement list seems to grow with his age.
4. Juan Manuel Marquez (Jr. Lightweight)
- Marquez is as technically sound fighter as you'll ever see.
5. Winky Wright (Middleweight)
- Losing to B-Hop is nothing to be ashamed of for this sure hall-of-famer.
6. Joe Calzaghe (Super Middleweight)
- Perhaps this champion will get the respect he deserves after his upcoming fight with Kessler.
7. Israel Vazquez (Jr. Featherweight)
- Note to fighters who beat him in the future: DO NOT fight a rematch.
8. Ricky Hatton (Jr. Welterweight)
- Hatton could jump alot of folks on this list if he can pull the upset Dec. 8.
9. Rafael Marquez (Jr. Featherweight)
- This little guy hits hard.
10. Shane Mosley (Welterweight)
- Sugar Shane has lost to a total of two fighters ever. Will it be a third in Nov.?

Honorable Mention: Miguel Cotto (Welterweight), Paul Williams (Welterweight), and Juan Diaz (Lightweight)

Helter Skelter Welters!

When I hit my knees at night, I thank the good Lord for the Welters. Think about it:

Floyd Mayweather- best fighter in the world, and one of the best ever (yup, I said it).

Sugar Shane Mosely- one of the best of his era (is it still his era? we'll see...).

Miguel Cotto- a raging, romping Puerto Rican bull (who goes in with his chin out).

Paul Williams- the Punisher looks like the real deal (he throws punches like a windmill).

Antonio Margarito- still one tough dude (I still don't see peeps lining up to fight him).

Ricky Hatton- Undefeated British Champ looking for the P4P title (another tough dude).

Not to mention that Mosley/Cotto and Mayweather/Hatton will be two GREAT fights that are almost too close to call.

Of course, I'll be sure to call 'em, but give the Mac Man a little more time.

Keep swingin'

Top Ten List?

As I formulated a top ten HWs list in my mind, I began to realize how formidable a task I was undertaking. There are so many eras in boxing, how can you rate the fighters against each other.

Was Joe Louis better than Lennox Lewis?

Could Mike Tyson take out Joe Frazier?

How would Jack Dempsey fare against Evander Holyfield?

In light of these questions, I realized that I would rather take the easy way out and copy someone else's list.

So here it is, taken right from his website:

George Foreman's Top Ten List
1 Joe Louis
2 Rocky Marciano
3 Lennox Lewis
4 Mike Tyson
5 JL Sullivan
6 Jack Dempsey
7 Muhammad Ali
8 Evander Holyfield
9 Larry Holmes
10 Gene Tunney

As you can see, what one person believes can be completely ludicrous to another. Ali at number 7?

Please.

Welcome to the Boxing Stop!

Wow.

I'm so befuddled at the lack of good articles written on the sweet science that I've taken up writting my own. I've tried this before only to get bogged (or blogged) down in the monotony of bouncing my thoughts off of that great wall of cyberspace oblivion.

But, I digress.

Welcome to the Boxing Stop: Your one stop shop for all your boxing needs (actually, I hope you come back more than once). Be on the lookout for my first official article on the ten greatest heavyweights of all-time!

Keep swingin'
